EVENING SKINCARE ROUTINE FOR TREATING ACNE

Do you ever find yourself standing at a beauty counter with 100 products in front of you, sick of life with the acne on your chawline, and an over enthusiastic sales woman trying to sell you everything in sight?

Promising you clear skin without mentioning the cost of these 14 products.

Do I need 4 serums and a toner?

Is ACID a good idea?

Here is the evening skincare routine that I have finally mastered, and FINALLY actually have clear skin.

1. CLEANSE

Firstly, use an oil based cleanser to melt that make up right off your skin. Oil dissolves oil, so for us oily birds – what more could we want?

I use the Elemis Pro Collagen Cleansing Balm – a cleanser that also increases collagen production at the same time as cleansing? Bonus! Sweep away all debris and excess sebum that’s built up throughout the day, leaving a soft, nourished and clean base.

2. DOUBLE CLEANSE

Then, opt for a Salicylic Acid Based Cleanser to really get into those pores and clear them out. I would really recommend investing in a good salicyclic acid cleanser, as the cheap ones just don’t work.

This Murad Clarifying Cleanser is infused with two types of salicylic acid – built to carry on working even after you have washed it off. And trust me, you can definitely feel it still working.

Also infused with green tea extract to help soothe any existing acne, this cleanser genuinely cleared my skin quicker than anything else.

2. TONE

You’ve just opened up all of your pores whilst cleansing, so now you need a toner to closes them all back up. And yes, my toner also has salicylic acid in…

The toner stays on your skin all night, giving the salicylic acid plenty of time to work.

I use the Clinique Clarifying Lotion 4. This was developed by Cliniques dermatologists purely for us – oily skin users. It’s so refreshing on your skin and leaves it absolutely spotless. Simply wipe over your skin with a cotton pad, making sure you get in all those nooks and crannies where those spots appear – around your mouth, along the jawline and in-between the eyebrows.

3. Serums

Serums are the extremely concentrated nutrients which can penetrate the skin way more then your moisturiser ever could. So if you want to invest in skincare, this is the place to do it! The best serum to get rid of acne? Retinol serums.

You might of heard about retinol to prevent wrinkles, but deep into the depths of my ‘how to get rid of acne’ google search, I came across an article that broke down the science of retinol, and how it in fact it clears out acne too.

How? Because retinol gets into the deeper layer of your skin, hence why it stimulates collagen. But at the same time, the fact it can penetrate so deep into your skin, it also gets rid of all that debris that is gearing up to create that spot.

This Sunday Riley Retinoid serum has a massive 6.5% retinol in, CoQ10 to repair damaged skin, and Hawaiian white honey to soothe and balance skin, leaving a more even-toned complexion.

Start with applying it twice a week, then every other night, to finally every night, and say hello to clear and wrinkle free skin.

4. Eye Creams

Moisturisers are way too thick to use on the delicate skin around your eyes –

it can actually build up in the bags under your eyes over time and make them puffy!

This is why eye cream is essential. Your eyes are the first place you will notice wrinkles forming, so you need a product that’s going to slow that down.

My absolute favourite is this Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Concentrate. I was actually suffering with a bit of exzema a few months ago on my eyelids and tried so many different creams to clear it up – and this is the only one that worked.

It literally drenches the eye in moisture and you wake up with plump and nourished eyes.

Tip – always apply eye serum before your moisturiser, otherwise some of your moisturiser will remain on your fingers when applying the serum to your eye area.

5. Moisturise

Finally, you need a lovely moisturiser to create a barrier and keep all of these ingredients on your skin. And the best product to lock in moisture?

Oil.

This is due to the occlusive effect oils have – Ok what the F does that mean? Occlusives are moisturizing agents that work by forming a protective layer on the surface of your skin and creating a barrier to prevent moisture loss.

I know what you’re thinking, oils are going to break me out. And I was fully prepared for a massive breakout the next day too.

But with the Sunday Riley Juno Antioxidant Oil, which is absolutely packed with every possible skin loving ingredient, my skin looked and felt like I’d just had a facial. It literally feels like your bathing in honey. And not a single spot in sight.

Especially after using a retinol serum, you need a good nourishing oil to avoid any flakiness or dry skin the next day. Your skin goes into repair mode at night and regenerates skin cells while you sleep, so any extra help for it to repair is much needed.
